Inspired by the insects that bring movement and life to gardens, forests, and fields, this handcrafted piece celebrates curiosity, discovery, and the often-overlooked details of the natural world. Its intentionally interpretive form is not intended to represent a particular species, allowing the simplicity of the silhouette and the beauty of the hardwoods to define the piece.
This handcrafted Garden Insect combines Gonçalo Alves and Maple, two distinctly different hardwoods that create their own natural contrast. Gonçalo Alves, native to tropical regions of Central and South America, is prized for its warm reddish-brown to golden-brown coloration and distinctive darker grain. The lighter Maple wings provide a striking counterpoint to the richer Gonçalo Alves body. No painted color is necessary, as the natural differences between the woods provide the visual character and dimension of the design.
Each Garden Insect is individually cut by hand on the bandsaw, then shaped, sanded, assembled, and finished by hand. The simplified form reflects the understated design found throughout Bandsaw Carvings, allowing the silhouette, contrasting hardwoods, and natural grain to become the artwork.
